Yes, you read the title correctly! Yes, it worked, it got you to my humble little blog where I hope I can encourage you to do the opposite of the title.
Reason 1 to do ministry alone: You will often feel lonely and misunderstood.
When you do ministry alone you will get the “me vs. the world” mentality and that leads to feeling overwhelmed and very lonely. Every leader wants that right?
WRONG! If you’re doing ministry alone, or have bought into the lie that only you can do it, or you don’t have anyone to help you, stop it! Hear me when I say, Please find someone to walk with you on this journey called ministry. Often when we do ministry alone, we feel like no-one understands what we go through.
Instead, think about a someone who has gifts you don’t have, or someone who is faithful with a few things and take them out to coffee. Share how your feeling and how they can fill a huge gap. Tell them, you’re done doing ministry alone. Watch what God can do with that.
Reason 2 to do ministry alone: You will lower the bar on leadership vision and growth.
When we do ministry alone we can get tunnel vision and that leads to short sighted vision or tunnel vision. When we bring in the second set of eyes we will grow as leaders and gain new vision and fresh perspectives on the way we are leading. When I talk with some leaders they’d love to get coaching/mentoring but say they lack time or resources to invest in getting help. I can tell you from personal experience that yes, it is costly sometimes to get help but I know it is worth every penny I have spent to have a coach in my life. I have grown and excelled as a leader because of it. You will go farther as a leader with someone at your side.
Reason 3 to do ministry alone: You will burnout and find a new career.
If you want a simple and easy exit strategy out of ministry or a leadership position, just keep doing ministry alone. If you desire to do something else instead of, impacting future generations then just keep believing you don’t/can’t change.
I believed that too, that I couldn’t learn to be organized, or think strategically. I was a creative, fun, kids guy who did that well but could never function the other way. By finding a coach, I was able to learn more about how God had “wired” me to lead and for the first time in 30 years of ministry I am totally comfortable with who I am and how I lead. I’m ok with not being the super organized one but have learned that I can function that way. I can do things, I never thought were my giftings. Without someone walking with me and helping me see what God sees, I would have continued to struggle.
So what can I now help you with? Why do I ask? because I am tired of seeing leaders struggle and it is a clear calling from God that I am to help others grow as leaders and to never do ministry alone.
