I’m a father of four children, two boys, and two girls, and I only wish that this book would have been available to me when I was first starting out. What Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller have done is put together 50 practical and useful strategies that any parent can and should be using.
No child comes with a “how-to” manual but instead most parents take what they have learned or observed either from friends who are parents, or from their own parent. This often leads one to a sense of major ups and downs and successes and failures.
The Christian Parenting Handbook is a great resource to assist parents in building a strategy for each individual child and of course its not focused on the outward, but instead, it brings into play the child’s heart.
For many parents the struggle is to change the child’s outward behavior and often they grab onto quick fixes, rather than getting to the root of the issue, the heart!
Each of the 50 strategies that are shared in this book are not only practical but are solidly based on Biblical principles. Most parenting books fail to start with the Word and just give advice, but that is not what the Turansky and Miller desire to do. They start with the word and build around it biblical ideas for parent’s to not only minister to their child but to help them see their hearts the way God does and how to make the needed changes to help the child live the way God desires.
I want to highly recommend that where ever you are in the parenting journey, this book is for you! It is never to late for you to employ these strategies for your family. Each one is so practical and useful that anyone can implement them.

Great review Tom. You got right to the “heart” of the matter. (Pun intended!) I especially like the way you noted that many parents settle for the quick fix and don’t have the long-term view. The heart-based approach has been revolutionary in my life. It’s helped me as a father, husband, leader, supervisor, coach, and in other areas. Behavior modification is effective if your only desire is to get your children to act a certain way. If you want to shape their character, you need to work on the level of the heart. My sons are both adults now and they are fine young men of good character. We consistently focused on the character quality of honoring others in our family! We returned home from vacation in December to find our whole house cleaned and a Christmas tree in place in the corner of the living room. Now that’s honor! This is just one example of the great insights from this special book. Every parent should have this book on their bookshelf or on their Kindle! No need to enter me in the contest.

We just left our 3 kids ages 16,18,20 home while my wife and I went to Denver for 5 days, and we too, came home with to a clean house and hearing stories of fun things happening. Greatest challenge for parents face today is equipping for today’s children. The challenges today’s children face are different from those we went through as kids. We need to get to know their culture as well.

Great review Tom!! I am getting ready to order my book now, and maybe 5 to give away to some parents and for the library at church. The biggest challenge….. wow, for me right now I think I would say is to believe that we have done our best with our 17 1./2 yr old and she will remember what we have taught her and will make the right decisions and if she doesn’t, she will learn and look to God. Letting go as our kids grow up is very difficult!!

Hello Tom, Thanks for the heads up on the book I just ordered a copy. As for the biggest challenge facing parents today, I think its our digital age, weather the computers,TV or video games. They compete for time at Church and home. As a Children’s Pastor I see more meltdowns over using “Mom’s” cell phone to play games than anything else the last six months. My son has been no exception he melted down last night because he couldnt watch someone else play a video game. I don’t have all the answers yet but I’m praying for them.

Hey Tom, Thanks for the review! I have a group going to a Biblical Parenting seminar tonight. I really wanted to attend but had this problem…be a parent or learn how to be a parent. I need to be a parent so I am going to go to my eldest son’s induction into the National Thespian Society tonight. I sent money for one of my team members to buy the a copy and get both a autograph from Dr. Scott and a receipt to send to them for the $400 bonus!
Right now the hardest thing in parenting is knowing that our time with our kids is growing shorter and soon they will be venturing out into the world. Knowing that I have not done enough, prayed enough or guided enough along the way…what can I do to increase our influence between now and then to assure them of their faith, purpose, and God will be strong and with stand all that life will throw at them?
We will continue to seek God and ask for protection but we will not relent on being the spiritual leaders of our house either!

The greatest challenge facing parents today?
Technology. Information, good and bad is gained so quickly today and it is not easy to filter some things like I, or my parents could. Teaching children/youth respect for social media, and filtering what is shared and received is important. It grows quickly and so it is hard for parents to keep up with all of the technology and how it affects their family.
