Give Yourself Permission!

So early on in my ministry career, I was given an opportunity to serve a church that was really struggling with their children’s and student ministries. I was asked to come in and help rebuild and kickstart the ministry so that hopefully, it would attract more families to hear the gospel.

I began to do what I learned from some wise leaders. Ask lots of questions. You need to find out why people are doing what they are doing and if they understood why they did it that way?

It was very clear there was no strategy, only programming happening and that is never a healthy way to have a growing and impactful ministry. You need a strategy and an end goal for those you hope to reach and disciple. It’s a mistake many churches continue to make despite knowing that what they currently do isn’t working.

Why does this happen? Well, leaders often believe they have to build someone else’s model, even if that model was the reason they were stuck, or even let go from ministry. When a church lacks the vision to stop doing something that isn’t working they put themselves into a rut and if you want to kill off a ministry that’s a starting point. So what’s the answer? That’s what the church wanted to know to.

As a leader, I have come to understand that sometimes you have to:

“Give yourself permission to change! you don’t have to build someone else’s model.”

I began to ask about what the church valued and what their priorities were and finally a look at what their end goal was for their ministry? You can do this with some fun and simple exercises and I love taking leaders and ministry teams through them.

Once you have those completed, you begin to evaluate the curriculum, format, room usage, overall facilities, first impressions, check-in, security and a few other areas to develop a master plan. This plan will have things you should keep doing, stop doing and fix. The team can prioritize and budget for the new model and begin rolling it out to make a greater impact for the kingdom.
