I heard it once said, “if you want to get somewhere fast go alone if you want to go further take someone with you.” (I may have messed that saying up, but it’s what I remember) In ministry, we often desire to be good leaders and so we read books, listen to podcasts, and attend conferences. I am often amazed when I think of how many thousands of dollars I’ve personally spent to read and attend conferences. Please don’t misunderstand what I’m about to say. (as I know some will) You don’t need another conference that promises the latest and greatest in Kidmin. You don’t need another book or podcast to be what God wants you to be and reach the children God desires for you to reach and disciple! What you do need is your Bible, a humble and teachable heart, and I believe someone to walk alongside you. Why do I believe this? Because after 30 years of ministry, the times that I’ve grown the most have been the times where I intentionally positioned myself alongside another leader who challenged me to dig deeper into my walk with Christ, to seek the Holy Spirits guidance and wisdom as I seek to grow myself as a follower and how to better serve and disciple those I lead.
The greatest return on investment I have ever had was when I decided not to attend a conference and instead invested in personal mentoring. I invested my own resources to get someone to walk with me and challenge my thinking. I will tell you it put me on a path that I have never regretted.
If you’re reading this and your serving in Kidmin, I would challenge you to consider how much you’ve invested in attending conferences, books, etc. Have you truly gotten long term return from those? Has it been long-lasting? I’m not saying anything against attending them, I love them and will continue to attend those that have the greatest benefits to me and the ministry I serve. What I am suggesting is maybe you should consider taking the resources you have and truly invest in yourself as a leader. Find a leader who has experience and giftings you can learn from. Talk to them and have them walk alongside you for a time. Have them challenge your thinking and ask the questions that beg to be asked both personally and professionally.
I will offer myself as a mentor/coach to you. I have served the body of Christ for over 30 years and I believe am called to now give my experience and life-lessons to benefit others. I’d be honored to walk with you, challenge you and to help you grow as a leader and as a follower of Jesus.
